The Center for Social Science Scholarship is pleased to continue our workshop series on generative AI, LLMs, and computational social science methods. This series for UMBC faculty and students was initially supported through the Elkins Professorship for Academic Transformations from the William E. Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation over the 2025-2026 academic year. Each session began with the basics of computing in R and how to use generative AI/LLMs in social science research workflows, and was focused on getting faculty and students comfortable with deploying AI and generative AI models in their research, but with a deeper understanding of the ethical, equity, and environmental consequences of these models.
Through the generous support of the Open Research Community Accelerator (ORCA) and its Catalytic Awards Program, Dr. Stokan and his team will also be working with local nonprofit and community organizations in the Baltimore area to explore how open-source research tools can help strengthen and improve existing organizational processes.
Meet our Graduate Assistant, Krishna Mummadi.
