Description
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) refer to a set of tools and methods used to capture, analyze, and visualize spatial data, enabling researchers to understand patterns and relationships across geographic areas. This session provides a brief overview of fundamental GIS concepts and real-world applications, demonstrating how spatial thinking can transform a research question into a clear and easy-to-understand visual explanation. The workshop also introduces GeoAI, highlighting how AI-driven agents can enhance research workflows and support more efficient spatial analysis. Participants will engage in hands-on activities using ArcGIS Online, RStudio, and StoryMaps, working with open-source data and imagery to create interactive maps.
Part of the Computational Social Science Series which is hosted by the Center for Social Science Scholarship and cosponsored by the Division of Information Technology, the Center for Scalable Data and Computational Science, and CGC-SCIPE. Registration is required.
