Social Science Spotlight: Public Investments and Social Inequities

Public Investments and Social Inequities

Dr. Eric Stokan is an assistant professor with the Department of Political Science at UMBC. He is also an affiliate faculty member at both the Indiana University Metropolitan Governance and Management Transitions (MGMT) lab and the Center for Urban Studies at Wayne State University.

Dr. Stokan studies how local governments make important economic development decisions and what the implications of those policies are on economic growth and social inequities.  His research, in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Idaho and Cleveland State University, has recently received a second round of funding ($267,807) from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to study the effect of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOMES program on social inequality. Dr. Stokan is also Co-PI on a HUD Technical Studies grant, in collaboration with the Center for Urban Studies ($770,203), to evaluate the effectiveness of alternative approaches to mitigate lead abatement exposure among children.
